Authorities stated they were notified by a individual who discovered a vehicle in Hanau smeared with reddish substance

Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.

Police then found numerous other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement report initial examinations show the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.

Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.

An important official stated the incident made him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
