The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
