Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
